AS THE GARDEN GROWS:
CORAL GABLES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT

With educational programming on preservation, sustainability and green living a major focus of the Coral Gables Museum, a garden project with historic Coral Gables Elementary School is a perfect fit for the Museum.

Working with school administrators, an edible vegetable garden idea blossomed, partners “sprung up”  and at the September 25th kick-off, 600 Coral Gables Elementary students were singing the theme song to the “As The Garden Grows” project and singing the praises of broccoli and eggplant!

The Coral Gables Museum, in association with Slow Food Miami, the Coral Gables Garden Club and the American Institute of Wine and Food integrated an edible garden and an herb garden on the Coral Gables Elementary School campus. Students maintained the garden, made compost, photographed, created artwork and kept a daily journal as to the garden’s progress.  Additionally, visiting chefs from AIWF taught cooking skills to the students and students visited the Whole Foods kitchen for hands-on cooking activities.

The school’s harvest and garden-based art works were showcased at the Coral Gables Farmers Market Finale on March 27th.
